This publication presents a novel early-life model to study the gastrointestinal microbiota compromised by clindamycin treatment, mimicking scenarios in infants exposed to antibiotics. The study investigates the effects of a synbiotic mixture of prebiotics (scGOS/lcFOS) and human milk oligosaccharide 2’-Fucosyllactose (2’-FL), either alone or combined with a mix of "infant type" bifidobacteria, on rescuing the disrupted microbiota.

The results show that the clindamycin treatment severely disturbed the microbiota, and the synbiotic intervention with the specific mix of bifidobacterial strains partially restored it. This finding suggests that the supplementation of scGOS/lcFOS/2’-FL with a particular bifidobacteria combination can be beneficial in reviving an antibiotic-perturbed gastrointestinal microbiota.
