Malnutrition & Nutritional Challenges

Talking, old woman or doctor with tablet for results, report or report history online in hospital in consultation. Support, healthcare or Asian nurse with medical update for elderly patient in clinic.

Older adults living with frailty commonly experience multiple long-term conditions, with multimorbidity affecting the majority of people aged ≥65 years and increasing substantially with age. Frailty, acute illness and recurrent hospitalisations can reduce appetite, increase inflammation and make it difficult to meet energy and protein requirements. Older malnourished patients may have up to 2.5-fold higher protein requirements, yet many remain unable to meet these needs. In addition, anabolic resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation reduce the muscle's response to dietary protein, accelerating weight loss, muscle loss and functional decline. Explore how malnutrition, frailty and poor muscle health are interconnected, how to screen and diagnose for nutritional challenges within the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, and how the multidisciplinary team can intervene early to improve outcomes and preserve independence
