Nutritional care for infants with congenital heart disease
Infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) face a high risk of malnutrition, yet regionally relevant guidance has been limited. In their publication, Alyaa Kotby and colleagues from Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates present a modified Delphi consensus on the nutritional assessment and management of infants with CHD in the Middle East.
What you will learn
Fifteen experts reached consensus on 43 statements, offering healthcare professionals a practical framework covering:
- Diagnosing malnutrition, including key components and cut-off points
- Caloric, protein and fluid requirements for infants with CHD
- Enteral and parenteral feeding, including tube feeding approaches
- Feeding practices, including breastfeeding and the use of formula
- Perioperative and critical care nutrition, the area with the highest agreement
The panel also highlights areas of variability in clinical practice, where further evidence is needed.
