Microbial colonization following birth is essential for establishing a symbiosis with our immune system and profoundly influences health throughout life. Prof. Nikos Papadopoulos, Prof. Douwe van Sinderen and Dr. Guus Roeselers explain how early life colonization by (specific) bifidobacteria is considered an important factor for immune development, protection against pathogens and may have life-long health implications. Breast-feeding allows rapid establishment of healthy bifidobacterial-rich community, being at least partly due to HMO metabolism. They will answer questions related to synbiotics and how they modulate the function and composition of the microbiome and by doing so stimulate immunity and tolerance development. Clinical benefits of synbiotics have been demonstrated in various settings.
