Improving Swallowing Safety in Post-Stroke Dysphagia

This publication presents the results of a clinical study evaluating the impact of a xanthan gum-based thickener (Nutilis Clear®) on swallowing safety in patients with poststroke oropharyngeal dysphagia (PSOD). Conducted on 120 patients, the study assessed seven viscosity levels using videofluoroscopy to determine how increasing fluid thickness affects aspiration risk and swallowing biomechanics. The findings reveal a viscosity-dependent improvement in swallowing safety, with optimal results observed between 150–800 mPa·s, without increasing pharyngeal residue.

Clinical Insights for HCPs

This resource is essential for healthcare professionals managing dysphagia in stroke patients. It offers you:

  • Evidence-based guidance on:
    • Optimal viscosity ranges for safe swallowing.
    • Reduction in aspiration risk and improved airway protection.
    • Biomechanical effects such as bolus velocity and laryngeal vestibule closure.
  • Practical applications for:
    • Clinical screening and diagnosis using tools like V-VST.
    • Personalized viscosity prescription based on patient phenotype.
    • Integration into multimodal dysphagia management strategies.
