This series serves as a crucial resource for healthcare professionals committed to advancing breastfeeding through evidence-based education and practices. The series consist of three webinars: this is the third and last webinar of the series.
Beyond the basics: Breastfeeding and vulnerable groups

This webinar addresses the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations, such as HIV-positive women, survivors of domestic violence, refugee mothers, and preemies in breastfeeding. It will explore strategies for tailored support, including culturally sensitive approaches, individualized counseling, and practices like skin-to-skin contact, while highlighting stories of resilience from mothers overcoming postpartum depression.
Agenda
The following topics will be discussed during this session:
- Supporting decision-making: Counselling and education for HIV-Positive women considering breastfeeding
- Building bridges: Supporting survivors of domestic violence on breastfeeding initiation and duration
- Skin-to-skin contact and kangaroo mother care: Enhancing breastfeeding Success in Preemies
- Celebrate progress: Stories of triumph and resilience from breastfeeding mothers overcoming postpartum depression
The overall objective will be to explore the unique challenges and barriers faced by vulnerable groups in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding, and to develop strategies and interventions to provide tailored support and advocacy for these populations.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the unique challenges faced by HIV-positive women in making decisions about breastfeeding.
- Recognise the importance of individualized counseling and education in empowering HIV-positive women to make informed choices regarding infant feeding practices.
- Identify the specific barriers and challenges faced by refugee mothers in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding.
- Learn culturally sensitive approaches to provide support and assistance to refugee mothers in overcoming breastfeeding challenges.
- Understand the importance of skin-to-skin contact and kangaroo mother care in neonatal care settings.
