The Global Breastfeeding Education Initiative (BFEI) Webinar Series, hosted by UNITAR, promotes breastfeeding education and improves maternal and child health outcomes globally. This series serves as a crucial resource for healthcare professionals committed to advancing breastfeeding through evidence-based education and practices. The series consist of three webinars: this is the first webinar of the series.

    This session focuses on the importance of responsive feeding and infant development, recognizing and interpreting feeding cues, and understanding the meaning behind infant cries.

    Agenda

    The following topics will be discussed during this session:

    • Responsive feeding and infant development
    • Challenges in recognizing feeding cues
    • Tears Tell Tales: Understanding the messages behind infant cries

    The overall objective is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize, interpret, and appropriately respond to infant feeding cues, fostering a supportive feeding environment that promotes optimal nutrition, growth, and emotional well-being in infants.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Understanding the concept of responsive feeding and its importance in supporting optimal infant growth and development.
    2. Identify cues and signals infants use to communicate hunger, satiety, comfort and other needs during feeding.
    3. Explore the role of responsive feeding in promoting healthy eating habits and preventing feeding-related issues later in life.
    4. Understand the importance of establishing consistent feeding routines for infants in promoting their overall health and well-being.
    5. Gain insight into the various reasons why infants cry, including hunger, discomfort, fatigue, and illness.
    6. Explore strategies for responding to infant cries in a sensitive and effective manner, including techniques for soothing and comforting distressed infants.
